  1. Hi, I’m building my own bass and i’m looking for a 5 string pickup that produces the closest sound of the Rickenbacker 4001. Any idea…

    • No, they will not, EMG Jazz 5 is for American basses or basses that have a 101mm and 105mm long jazz bass pickups only. Your Mexican will accept the standard sizes that EMG have already been selling for years and years.

Actually, it may help to know, that there is no distinction of being specifically for a 4 or 5 string bass of the older jazz pickups because they are capable of both. The old standard sizes are 91mm and 95mm (1″-5/8″ and 1″ 3/4″). I believe you will find your Mexican will require 2 of the ‘short’ 91mm sized, but please confirm the measurements for yourself before ordering.

    • Maybe. We have found that standard equipment pickups on MIM basses can vary in size. Therefore it is best to measure the length of the pickups you wish to replace. The J5s are a set of pickups which are 101 and 105mm, which works out to one ever so slightly longer than 4″ and one slightly shorter than 4″. If in measuring your pickups you find something different, e.g. 2 pickups that measure 3-3/4″(95mm), you will need a differently sized set from EMG for your bass. ~Max
